Rehabilitation Research & Training Center for Stroke Research (RRTC-Stroke)Stroke is a very common disorder, constituting the largest source of severe continuing disability in the United States. It affects people in diverse age groups, of both genders, and all ethnic backgrounds. Although stroke often affects those at or beyond retirement age, about one-third of stroke survivors are under age 65 years.
The Rehabilitation Research & Training Center (RRTC-Stroke) conducts a series of studies of rehabilitation interventions and assessments focused on improving mobility, improving employment outcomes, and increasing the stroke survivor’s ability to participate fully in their communities.

Better Speech and Hearing Month Center for Aphasia ResearchThe RIC Center for Aphasia Research is constantly investigating ways to improve speech and communication disorders. Aphasia is a disorder that causes an impairment in speech and language abilities. Aphasia disorders result from damage to portions of the brain responsible for language. Aphasia commonly occurs due to brain damage from a head injury or stroke. In addition to providing aphasia rehabilitation for inpatients, outpatients, and day rehabilitation patients, RIC provides a month long Aphasia intensive therapy program to increase the possibility of improved communication. RIC’s Center for Aphasia Research and Treatment also investigates novel ways to treat aphasia and conducts clinical research studies to establish the effectiveness of these aphasia treatments.
