Domestic Violence Services Program - Chicagoland

Reviewed February 2014
People with disabilities can be targets of domestic violence. Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of behavior that seeks to dominate another person through fear or intimidation. Types of abuse against people with disabilities include physical restraint or confinement, sexual assault, emotional abandonment and rejection, and denial to access or misuse of financial resources.

Many barriers prevent victims from getting help: inaccessible services; fear of caregiver retaliation; lack of appropriate resources; and discrimination by service providers.

The Domestic Violence Services Program is a free, confidential service that provides support, information and access to resources people may need to regain control of their lives.
